John Betts (tenor) - With over 24 years of singing barbershop harmony, John has sung the bass part, and now sings tenor. His various quartet experiences include Moments in Time and Our Gang. John’s talent runs all the way down to his fingertips, too. Back in 1986, John played bass in a band that traveled to Nashville and won 2nd place in the True Value Country Show Down talent contest. And he currently plays and sings in the “Jerry Cole and the High Plains Drifters” band. John whistles while he works as a painter by day, then enjoys going to his home in Kirtland to be with his wife, Diana, and daughters, Jessica and Christine. Rick Haywood (lead) - After joining the Elyria Cascade Chordsmen in 1982, Rick served the chorus as President, Treasurer, Annual Show Chairman, and Dinner Show Chairman. He was chosen as the Elyria BOTY (Barbershopper of the Year) in 1997, and was inducted into the Elyria Chapter Hall of Fame in 1999. Rick previously sang lead in chapter quartets - Vocal Express and Fame and Fortune. Rick lives in Elyria with his family - Laura, Lindsay, and Braeden, but he works in Akron as a Project Manager for FirstMerit Bank. Dave Rubin (baritone) – Dave has been involved with both instrumental and vocal music through- out his life. Though his musical interests run from Renaissance madrigals to rock-n-roll, Barbershop quartet singing remains his favorite. Somehow he finds time to direct the Tower City Chorus (Cleveland West Suburban) and sing with the Independence Chorus as well as The News! You may hear Dave's arrangements being sung by many of these groups since he is an accomplished arranger. He lives in Bedford Heights. Dave Smotzer (bass) – Dave is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with majors in Musical Theater and Political Science. While at BGSU, Dave became involved in a barbershop quartet as the tenor in the Rapscallions. The "Raps" won the JAD championship in 1981, then were crowned SPEBSQSA International Champions in 1984. Dave was the youngest director to win an International medal by directing the Cincinnati Western-Hills Chapter. He also has the distinction of being the JAD Director of the Year and Coach of the year. David now gives his full attention to directing The Men of Independence Chorus. For information, contact Rick at TheNewsQT@oh.rr.com, or (440) 323-0616. The Sunshine Committee
The Sunshine Committee has been singing together for three years, and all are members of The Men of Independence, a local award-winning chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Three of the singers are also members of Cleveland's Tower City Chorus. They have delighted audiences at numerous Barbershop and Sweet Adeline shows, and have performed in hospitals, classrooms, at Masonic functions, Catholic and Protestant religious services, restaurants, churches, professional sporting events, and even at Firestone Country Club! The quartet won first place gold medals in the 2004 Greater Cleveland Novice Quartet Championship and more recently competed in the 2006 Johnny Appleseed District Competition which included the top quartets in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. As "first-time" District Contest entrants, The Sunshine Committee was thrilled when they advanced to the Final Round as contenders and is appreciative to have achieved the distinction of being one of the District's Top Ten quartets! The foursome achieved a tremendously exciting milestone in their musical careers when they were selected to perform in The Cleveland Orchestra's 2007 Star-Spangled Pre-Concert Festival on Public Square, celebrating the birthday of our wonderful United States of America. This was especially gratifying because all four men are United States military veterans. John, Dave and Lyn served in the Army, and Dan served in the Coast Guard. The Sunshine Committee vocalists love this hobby and all share a passion for good singing, close a cappella harmonies and the Barbershop style of music. All are happily married husbands and fathers, and thank their loving wives for being their excellent support team ! John Kaspar, a resident of Broadview Heights, sings Lead. Although relatively new to Barbershop, he is an accomplished soloist and has performed at many weddings and funerals in churches all over greater Cleveland for years. He has enjoyed singing in choirs and glee clubs since his early days in elementary, high school and college and continues to minister in his church choir. Lyn Daberkow, a West Park Cleveland resident, sings Bass and has sung in the Barbershop Harmony Society for 27 years. He brings a wealth of experience to the group as a quartet singer, chorus section leader, board and committee member, and has vast musical knowledge. Lyn's best contribution to the group, however, is his velvety bass voice. Dave Slife, a Lakewood resident, handles the Baritone part. Dave manages the quartet's rehearsals, travel, and refreshments and is nationally known for the best parties and after glows in the Society. He sings a wonderfully strong baritone and also brings years of singing and quartet experience to the quartet. Dan Lenahan, also from Lakewood, sings Tenor and takes a large part of credit for bringing the group together. He has sung with The Men of Independence almost from its inception, and has had choir and soloist experience that dates back to his college years in the early 70's. For booking information and available dates, please call John Kaspar at 440 582-9020, or email the quartet at Johnkarenkaspar@aol.com. Based in northeast Ohio, What’s Next was formed in 2007 with the goal of singing at a professional level while having fun and entertaining our audiences. This young quartet draws on the experience of four seasoned area singers and three licensed music teachers. From Do-Whop to Gospel to Barbershop, this mix of voices is sure to impress at your event. Quartet members have performed with the Cleveland Orchestra chorus, the Choir of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, the Men of Independence, Opera Cleveland, Apollo’s Singers of Apollo’s Fire, and Quire Cleveland. Allow us to put our professional experience to work for you! www.whatsnextquartet.com Ian Crane, tenor, teaches music at Benedictine High School in Cleveland. He’s involved in area music ensembles including Quire Cleveland and Apollo Singers (of Apollo’s Fire), singing bass. Ian is working on his master’s degree in choral conducting at Kent State and looks forward to the day when he is home more than two nights a week. Ian is married to his beautiful and very patient wife, Tricia, and is the proud father of the first addition to the family, Phoebe. Mike Wentzel, lead, is just a guy who likes to sing. He’s also the newest member of What’s Next, and has the best voice. Naturally, Tyler had to move to baritone (sorry Tyler). Tyler Skidmore, the baritone of What’s Next, has enjoyed singing in barbershop quartets and choruses since high school, first as a tenor, then a lead, and now a baritone (how did that happen?). He is a member of the Men of Independence Chorus and has enjoyed participating in various ‘classical’ choirs around the Cleveland area. During the day, Tyler teaches choir at Medina High School, and during the evening, he is either taking graduate music classes at Kent State or in a rehearsal of some kind. On the weekends, he is active as a musician and board member at the Wadsworth Church of the Nazarene. Steve Sprunger, bass, teaches 8th grade American history in North Royalton, but he still hasn’t decided what he wants to be when he grows up. He does have an angel for a wife who mothered 4 children, may God help her. Steve is very active with Cubscouts and his children’s sport teams. He also has many part-time jobs such as Petitti Garden Center, and Weymouth C.C. in Medina.

The HOT AIR BUFFOONS first weighed in back in 1996. We set out on a quest to sing well and entertain our audiences in a fashion they have never seen before. We soon surprised ourselves and others by not only making people laugh but by progressing in the competition realm as well. We excelled in a competition that was MADE for us and took home gold medals and a pretty large trophy (which signifies 1st place) in the 2001 internationally renowned Buckeye Invitational Comedy Quartet Competition in Columbus, Ohio. Try saying that 5 times real fast. We have continued in the competition realm and are now the 2005 Johnny Appleseed District Champions. We have also competed internationally and have been ranked in the top 50 quartets for the last 5 years and as high as 16th, twice. Despite our successes in the competition venue, our true love is to entertain. The BUFFOONS have performed on a number of chapter shows (pick any number between 1 and 1,000,000) and if you ask anyone that we have performed for, they will confirm that we are never serious (nor do we want to be). If you have seen us before, we hope that you have enjoyed our performance and have fully recovered from the injuries suffered from "sidesplitting" laughter. But, if you haven't had the chance to hear the unique style of the HOT AIR BUFFOONS, we encourage you to lock yourself in your storm cellar now, because before long, we'll be everywhere and you'll find yourself sucked into our stupid humor and crazy antics. We just ask one thing, DON'T MAKE FUN OF THE FAT GUY!!!!!!!!!! Other Chapter Quartets and Contact Person:
